SmartFlow not only calculates maintenance fluid rates but can also calculate rates for your dehydrated patients and any additives you wish to use.

When adding a Fluid to your flowsheet, the fluid Maintenance rate will automatically be calculated based on the patient's weight. It is possible to manually adjust the maintenance rate depending on the treatment plan by entering a new value in the Maintenance rate field or by setting an appropriate Sx rate factor:

NOTE: Please avoid entering a custom Maintenance rate or Hourly fluid rate for a patient and use the Sx factor instead (such as 1.5x, 2.0x, etc.) where possible. If you want to use a custom value, please make sure that you check the fluid rate each time you change the patient weight, as the Hourly fluid rate value will be recalculated based on the new weight and selected Sx rate. In this case, the fluid rate may change significantly (please find more details HERE).

Also, based on the dehydration rate you can calculate your fluid deficit. After the clinical observation of the patient, enter the Dehydration (%) and duration you expect to restore fluids - Restore dehydration over (hour). Once entered, the Fluid Deficit (ml) and Hourly fluid rate (ml/hour) will be calculated automatically.

NOTE: When necessary, you can edit the calculated Hourly fluid rate (ml/hour) value.

Along with fluids set up, you can also include an Additive to the treatment. To do this, please add the name of the additive, its concentration, and measure unit:

Once added, if the dose exceeds the acceptable limit for the patient, a pop-up window will appear warning you that you have exceeded the maximum dose and your selection is toxic to the patient. It will also give a suggested dosage, which you can either choose to Change or Ignore:

IMPORTANT: Due to some technical issues, this pop-up may not appear in the Smart Flow web version. That's why we strongly recommend adding Additives using your iPad. We apologize for this inconvenience and hope to fix it soon.

The Maintenance rate can be changed at any time during the patient's treatment. For example, if the dehydration status has changed for your patient, and you would like to increase or decrease the fluid rate. To do this, go to the Fluids section of the Flowsheet (if from the iPad, please enter the Editing Mode) > select the fluid you would like to change > adjust the Hourly fluid rate (ml/hour), and then press Done. You can also change the highlighting color of the treatment cell so that all staff can notice the changes.

However, for proper billing, we recommend you to follow THESE steps.
